Memorable experience. Would 100% recommend. However the audio devices, though generally ok, 1 of ours ran out of battery close to the end of the tour. I also noted that at times they would just skip a section. Other than that, would happily do it again!!

Great tour guide .. giving interesting historical information about the building. The views from the top are amazing , well worth the 124 steps !! Which are not ascended in one go thankfully 😊. Good variety of products in the gift shop too . Just would have liked some commentary during the video which also was amazing .

Inside the Clock Room

Your visit begins inside the original clock room, where a carefully timed sound and light show wraps around you, explaining how this building rose above the docks and became a symbol of Liverpool’s ambition and pride.

Stories in the Visitor Centre

Next, move through the Visitor Centre, where photographs, drawings, and displays explain why the building was constructed, how it worked day to day, and how it supported a busy port shaped by trade and movement.

Climbing the West Tower

With an expert guide leading the way, you head into the West Clocktower, learning how the clocks function, what life was like for workers, and how the building still keeps time for the city below.

Meeting the Liver Bird

One of the most memorable moments is standing close to the Liver Bird sculptures, noticing feathers, talons, and expressions that are impossible to spot from street level, and understanding why they matter so deeply to locals.

Views from above

The tour ends on the fifteenth floor viewing platform, where large windows frame the River Mersey and Pier Head, other working docks, and Liverpool’s rooftops, giving you a calm moment to take in the city’s shape and scale.

Pace and duration

The full experience lasts just over an hour and follows a clear, easy flow, mixing indoor spaces with elevated views, so it feels engaging without being rushed or physically demanding for most visitors.

Visitor Centre galleries

Walk through curated galleries filled with archival photographs, models, and original design details that explain how the building functioned day to day, who worked here, and how its location connected offices directly to the busy docks outside.

The West Clocktower

Enter the working clocktower with your guide and stand beside the vast clock mechanism, learning how it still keeps time for Liverpool and what maintenance, precision, and responsibility were required to keep it running reliably.

The Liver Birds

Stand just feet away from the legendary Liver Bird sculptures, close enough to see carved feathers and weathered stone, while hearing the stories, myths, and meanings that turned these figures into lasting symbols of Liverpool.

Views across the Mersey

Pause at high level viewing points that look directly over the River Mersey, ferries, docks, and waterfront buildings, revealing how the city’s economy, movement, and identity have always been shaped by water.

Visitor tips

  • Plan toilet stops early: There are no toilet facilities once the tour begins. Visit the toilets in the lower ground exhibition space before your time slot is called.
  • Expect controlled pacing: Time at each viewing level is carefully managed to keep groups moving safely, so prepare to enjoy views efficiently rather than lingering for long periods.
  • Mind the clock chimes: The clock strikes loudly near the upper levels. If you are sensitive to sudden noise, collect free ear protectors before leaving the briefing area.
  • Dress for wind and weather: Upper outdoor platforms are exposed to wind and rain. Comfortable shoes and weather appropriate layers will make the higher sections more enjoyable.
  • Know the stair commitment: Beyond level ten, the tour involves multiple stair sections. Consider your comfort with heights, exertion, and narrow spaces before continuing upward.
  • Secure small belongings: Hands free movement is helpful on stairs. Use zipped pockets or small bags to avoid juggling phones or loose items during climbs.
  • Check weather forecasts: Visibility from the top changes dramatically with weather. Clear days offer long distance views, while rain or fog may limit what you can see.
  • Bring children prepared: The tour includes dark spaces, loud sounds, and height exposure. Preparing children in advance helps them feel comfortable throughout the experience.
